Description
KATHERINE HIGAT A WROTE HER MOTHER and father dozens of letters before an envelope with the postmark Springfield, Ohio, October 15, 1952, arrived at her house on Lipona Street in Honolulu. It was addressed in her father's small, spiked handwriting and smelled dry and smoky. She could picture him with an ink pen in one hand and a cigarette in the other, his thin forehead creased and dry as a leaf of tobacco airing in his barn. He thanked Katherine for the photographs of newborn Linda she'd sent two months before. Katherine's husband, Lester, had taken them the day they brought Linda home from the hospital. After that, Katherine's father wrote once a month. They were ordinary chatty letters about his neighbors, the church, his apple orchard, and Katherine's mother's health, which was always robust, though she still took to her bed once a month with what she called female troubles. They didn't come to visit until 1959, and by then Katherine and Lester's second child, Paul, was five years old. Two envelopes arrived in the mail the week before Linda's birthday at the beginning of August. One contained a card for Linda with a dollar bill and was signed, "Love Mamaw and Papaw" in Katherine's father's handwriting. The other was a letter, also from her father, which said that he and her mother wanted to come to Hawai'i for the month of December. Would that suit her?
